Lummi girls fall in play-in game

Lummi fell behind early and couldn’t quite mount a comeback in a 39-27 loss to Cedar Park Christian Mountlake Terrace on Saturday, Feb. 7, at home in a Class 1B Northwest District Tournament play-in game.

The Blackhawks were eliminated from postseason play with the loss after falling behind 9-2 in the first.

Treena Humphreys led Lummi with 12 points. Janyha Ell added seven points, Halle Sturgeon had four and Sarah Burke and Tressa Toby had two apiece.

Cedar Park had five girls as tall or taller than Lummi’s tallest player, and dominated the boards, Lummi coach Albert Toby said in a phone interview.

“We hung with them for awhile until they had a good run in the third and fourth to separate, but we were only getting one shot and they kept getting rebounds,” he added.

Toby returned as the Blackhawks coach after a few seasons away from the team. This was his first season with this group of Blackhawks, but seniors Halle Sturgeon, Treena Humphreys, Sarah Burke, Tonya Teton and Seaneen Roberts impressed him this season, he said.

“Treena brought a lot of floor leadership; she was our floor general and ran the offense,” Toby said. “Halle was big on controlling the boards on offense and defense. I’m looking forward to seeing Janyha Ell, Nicki Revey and Sabryn Tom step into rolls on varsity next year. They’re our quicker guards with good ball-handling skills, so they’ll probably see a lot of time.”

This year’s Lummi squad won more games (four) than it had the past two season combined (three).

“I just want to applaud the seniors for fighting during this whole season, all the way to the end, and the young girls for sticking with us and gaining the experience,” Toby said. “The younger girls are excited about playing together now and taking part in spring and summer leagues, and some camps in the summer, so we’re excited about next year.”
