Trojans’ comeback falls just short against quick Cubs

Meridian’s boys’ basketball team came back from 20 points down to one point down, but couldn’t quite overcome Sedro-Woolley in a 66-55 Northwest Conference loss on Friday, Feb. 6, at Meridian.

The Trojans (12-9, 4-8 NWC) were led by Alex Martin’s 23 points, but had big contributions from the rest of the team in the comeback.

“Attempting to play at their pace took us out of our game and away from our strengths,” Meridian coach Shane Stacy said in a phone interview. “I think we used up quite a bit of energy (in the comeback). Defensively, Cody Bachman did good for us, and energy-wise, Kyle Young did good on the offensive glass.”

Jackson Price led the Cubs with 24 points.

The loss doesn’t hurt Meridian too much, as it advances to the Class 1A District Playoffs to host Sedro-Woolley on Monday, Feb. 9, at a time to be announced.
