Cox’s 18 points lifts Cubs to 56-53 victory

Sedro-Woolley’s girls’ basketball team rallied behind Samantha Cox’s 18 points in its 56-53 win over Meridian on Thursday, Feb. 5, at Sedro-Woolley High School.

Taylor Torgeson added 16 for the Cubs (2-16 overall, 1-9 NWC). Ryley Zapien led the Trojans (9-10 overall, 4-7 NWC) with 26 points and Ellesse FitzGerald had 15.

“Sedro wanted it more than we did,” Meridian coach Mark Gilmore said in a phone interview. “Once Sedro got some energy they played hard and we didn’t step up and match their intensity.”

Meridian committed a foul late in the game to put Sedro-Woolley on the free throw line and win the game, Gilmore said.
