Golden Eagles hold off Lyncs

Malik Ivory exploded for a career-high 23 points to lead Ferndale’s boys’ basketball team over the Zach Roetcisoender-less Lynden Christian, 64-62, in a Northwest Conference game on Tuesday, Feb. 3, at Ferndale.

Ivory also added four assists and John Weg pitched in 14 points. Austin Honeycutt had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Golden Eagles (13-6, 7-4 NWC).

Ferndale almost lost it late in the game thanks to 2-of-12 free throw shooting, but stiff defense helped it hold on.

“In the fourth our defense stepped up with (Brady) Shearer holding (Jake) Poag to two in the fourth and (Sky) Freeman coming off the bench to hold (Cody) Fransen to two in the fourth,” Ferndale coach Monte Walston said in a phone interview. “I thought Malik Ivory stepped up with seven 3s and 23 points.”

Poag finished with 22 points for Lynden Christian (12-7, 6-5), thanks to a 17-point first half, and Josiah Meppelink added 12. Ten of his 12 came in the fourth quarter when Poag and Cody Fransen, who scored 14 in the game, were stymied.

Ferndale wraps up its regular season with a 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, game at Burlington-Edison. Lynden Christian takes on Mount Baker at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at Mount Baker.
