Moore’s big second leads Storm over Mounties, Soares

Harper Moore scored 13 points in the second half and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to overcome Timothy Soares’ 20-point night for Mount Baker and lead Squalicum’s boys’ basketball team to a 60-54 Northwest Conference win over Mount Baker on Tuesday, Feb. 3, at Squalicum.

“It was senior night and (Moore) celebrated,” Squalicum coach Dave Dickson said in a phone interview. “He got open shots and hit them. He had three 3s in the second half.”

Squalicum (13-5, 8-2 NWC) also got 13 points from Josiah Westbrook, and 10 from Damek Mitchell, who added eight assists.

The Mountaineers (6-13, 2-8) led by seven at halftime, but the Storm surged back in the second half.

“We got a little fired up at the half and got excited to make a better effort,” Dickson said.

Soares added eight rebounds for Baker, tied for the team lead with TJ Bass, who also added 13 points.

Squalicum plays next at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, at Burlington-Edison. Mount Baker hosts Lynden Christian at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at home.
