Strong start helps Borderites earn win over Trojans

The Blaine girls’ basketball team built a sizable first-quarter lead and played tough the rest of the way to earn a 66-49 Northwest Conference win Tuesday, Feb. 3, at Blaine High School.

Mandy Hayes led the Borderites (8-11, 7-4 NWC) with 14 points, Barb Pocus scored 11 and Breanna Chau added nine to go with a team-high six assists.

“Barb came in on senior night and she had nine first-half points,” Borderites coach Ryan Pike said in a phone interview. “She got some rebounds for us, and Barb did a good job.”

The Borderites led 21-8 after the first quarter and played Meridian nearly even the rest of the way.

Meridian’s Kyrin Baklund made all four of the Trojans’ 3s, finishing with a game-high 19 points. Ryley Zapien contributed 10 points.
