Shorthanded Blackhawks fall to Lopez

With three starters out due to injury, including leading scorer Treena Humphreys, the Lummi girls’ basketball team suffered a 57-10 loss to Lopez on Monday, Feb. 2, at Lummi.

Lopez jumped out to an early lead, ahead 20-2 after the first quarter. It continued to cruise until the fourth, when Lummi managed to hold Lopez to just four points, but didn’t get a basket of its own.

Sarah Burke’s four points led Lummi.

“We got to play a lot of young, inexperienced players, and it was a good opportunity for them to get varsity time,” Lummi coach Albert Toby said in a phone interview. “I was really pleased with how we didn’t give up against a great team.”

Toby praised eighth grader Cadence John, who got her first varsity basket of the season and finished with two points. Halle Sturgeon and Jayda Phair also added two points apiece.

Lummi will look to bounce back on Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Grace Academy.
