Trojans hold off Mountaineers

Meridian’s boys’ basketball team earned a 65-63 win over Mount Baker on Saturday, Jan. 31, at Meridian with a dramatic finish.

The Trojans led 53-51 in the final minute and Keenan Gray hit two free throws to tie the game at 53-all. Alex Martin drove the ball up the floor for Meridian, missed a 3-pointer and got his own rebound before kicking it out to Kyle Young for the winning bucket with one second left.

Martin finished with 29 points, nine rebounds and six assists, all game-high totals.

“They definitely had him in their cross hairs,” Meridian coach Shane Stacy said in a phone interview. “They had a lot of contact with him every time down the court, and he responded well. He kept his head and kept fighting.”

Timothy Soares led the Mountaineers with 19 points and eight rebounds.

Meridian takes on Blaine at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, at home. Mount Baker plays at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, at Squalicum.
