Schilder leads Red Raiders over Mountaineers

Bellingham had three players score in double figures to counter Timothy Soares’ 22-point night in a Red Raider 65-55 Northwest Conference boys’ basketball win on Thursday, Jan. 29, at Bellingham.

Logan Schilder led the way for Bellingham with 16 points, 10 rebounds and four assists, all team-leading totals.

“We just kept grinding and I thought in the third a lot of guys chipped in and we executed on offense better,” Bellingham coach Brad McKay said in a phone interview. “We shot free throws better, too. We were 10 of 13 in the third and that helped us space up the game. Schilder played really well for us and was tough to guard. And so was Soares for them, it was a big man’s game that went back and forth.”

Schilder’s assists mostly came in the first half, as he had 12 of his 16 in the second. He really picked up the scoring once Soares had to sit with four fouls in the thrid quarter.

Grant Balvanz added 13 for the Mountaineers and TJ Bass had 12. Austin Shenton scored 11 and Kieran Lewis had 10 for Bellingham.

Bellingham plays next at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, at Nooksack Valley. Mount Baker takes on Meridian at 7:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, on the road.
