LC boys’ basketball earns team win over Blaine

The Lynden Christian boys’ basketball team rallied with a pair of players out due to illness to earn a 65-53 Northwest Conference win Thursday, Jan. 29, at Lynden Christian.

The Lyncs (11-6, 5-4 NWC) were without leading scorer Zach Roetcisoender and Nate Hielkma, but Cody Fransen’s 28 points and 13 rebounds helped masked their absence. Grant Rubbert and Jo Meppelink each scored eight points.

Blaine’s Jalen Kortlever scored a team-best 12 points, and Shaq Woods chipped in 10.

The Borderites (5-13, 3-7 NWC) led 23-22 at half, but LC outscored Blaine 23-10 in the third quarter and converted 10 of 12 free throws in the fourth to ice the game.

“It was a great team effort with Zach and Nate out with illness,” LC coach Roger DeBoer said in a phone interview. “Fransen’s numbers were off the charts, 28 points, 13 rebounds, four steals and two blocks.”
