Blackhawks topped by Lopez Island

Lummi’s girls’ basketball team was no match for Lopez Island, as the Blackhawks fell 68-18 on Wednesday, Jan. 28, at Lopez Island High School.

Lopez Island used pressure defense to force 15 first-half turnovers by the Blackhawks and then capitalized on the other end to pull to a 44-11 lead.

“Lopez is probably the top team in our league,” Lummi coach Albert Toby said in a phone interview. “Our girls got a front row seat to see that type of basketball. We really got a good look at how an offense is supposed to be run.”

The Blackhawks got five-point efforts from Janyha Ell and Halle Sturgeon.

Lummi plays Tulalip Heritage at Thursday, Jan. 29, at home.
