Bryan, Mariners edge Squalicum

Sehome’s Maddy Bryan and Squalicum’s Sarah Hulbert matched each other almost shot for shot with 22 points each, but the Sehome girls’ basketball team had a little more luck on offense to earn a 42-35 win over Squalicum on Tuesday, Jan. 27, at Squalicum in a Northwest Conference game.

The Mariners (5-11, 1-7 NWC) shut down Storm (8-8, 3-5) leading scorer Chalae Wolters, holding her without a field goal and with only three points.

“It was Sarah Hulbert versus Maddy Bryan tonight, they (Sehome) just had enough others sprinkled in,” Squalicum coach Mark Wright said in a phone interview. “They did a good job taking Chalae away, did a good job defending her.”

Sehome held Squalicum to just 1-of-20 shooting in the first half, but the Storm was able to scrape together some points on free throws.

“It’s crazy to be in the game at that point,” Wright said. “It seems like we expended a lot of energy to get to that point.”

Squalicum looks to bounce back at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, at Sedro-Woolley. Sehome hosts Burlington-Edison at 7:15 p.m. the same day.
