Pioneers sink Trojans

Arlissa Oettel poured in 15 points and Brianna Turner added 14 to lead Nooksack Valley’s girls’ basketball team to a 53-28 Northwest Conference win over Meridian on Tuesday, Jan. 27, at Meridian.

“They just out-played us,” Meridian coach Mark Gilmore said in a phone interview. “They played mostly man-to-man, but flipped into a zone a few times. I thought we had opportunities but didn’t make the shots.”

Rebounding was a big factor in the Pioneers’ (11-5, 4-4 NWC) big win, as they held a 42-23 advantage over the Trojans (9-8, 4-5 NWC) on the boards.

Janessa Murphy led Meridian with nine points and Ellesse FitzGerald added seven.

Meridian plays again at 7:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at Mount Baker. Nooksack Valley hosts Anacortes at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, at home.
