Meridian’s pressure too much for Pioneers

After a strong 14-5 first quarter, Nooksack Valley’s boys’ basketball team couldn’t handle Meridian’s pressure in its 52-27 loss Tuesday, Jan. 27, at Nooksack Valley High School.

Alex Martin led the Trojans with 24 points and Nick Rautenberg added 16 points. The Pioneers’ Jeremy Toner led the team with nine points, and Noah Rawls added six points and nine rebounds.

“(Meridian) applied pressure after the first quarter and we had trouble taking the ball up,” Nooksack Valley coach Chris Scrimsher said in a phone interview.

Rawls played the point guard position well in the game, Scrimsher highlighted, as well as Brady Wood’s great defense throughout the game.

Nooksack Valley will be back in action against Anacortes at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, on the road and Meridian will play Mount Baker next at 7:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at home.
