Bellingham steps up D in win

Bellingham’s girls’ basketball team used a strong defensive second quarter to propel to a 46-31 victory over Sedro-Woolley on Monday, Jan. 26, at Bellingham High School.

The Red Raiders’ Joelle Zamora led the game with 12 points, Kylie Clark added 9 points and two assists. Susie Bennett contributed four points and 12 rebounds.

“Sarahbeth Pemple took a charge on (Sedro-Woolley’s) Mikayela Nutting in the second quarter. That put her in foul trouble and took her out for most of the quarter,” Bellingham coach Ed Wissing said in a phone interview.

Nutting scored seven of the Cubs’ 12 points in the first quarter. With her out, Sedro-Woolley failed to make a basket throughout the whole second quarter as Bellingham scored 12 to take a 24-12 lead into the locker room.

“We did a good job defensive rebounding and taking away second chance opportunities tonight,” Wissing said.

Pemble took two charges in the game, including the crucial one against Nutting, Wissing highlighted. Clark, who shot 5 for 6 from the free throw line and Bennett’s 12 rebounds also stood out to Wissing in the game.

“Kylie did a good job attacking the basket tonight and Susie has a nose for the ball and puts herself in the right spot,” Wissing said.

Bellingham will be in action against Mount Baker next at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, at Mount Baker.
