Borderites overcome slow start, Cascade Christian

Blaine’s girls’ basketball team recovered from a two-point first quarter to rally and defeat Cascade Christian 54-39 on Saturday, Jan. 24, at Cascade Christian in a nonleague game.

Mandy Hayes led the Borderites (7-9, 6-2 Northwest Conference) with 14 points, seven rebounds and four of the team’s six 3-pointers.

“We struggled a bit at the beginning,” Blaine coach Ryan Pike conceded in a phone interview. “Of turnovers, we had eight in the first quarter, of 15 for the game. In the second quarter we got steals for easy lay-ins. We got our hands in the passing lanes and made our lay-ins.”

Josie Deming added 11 points for Blaine. After starting with just two points in the first quarter, Blaine scored 21 in both the second and third quarter.

The Borderites play again at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, at Ferndale.
