Sehome’s boys’ basketball team was master of the press on both offense and defense in a 68-48 Northwest Conference win over Blaine on Friday, Jan. 23, at Sehome.
Leif Anderson and Tanner Clark led the Mariners (12-5, 6-1 NWC) with 15 points apiece. Clark led the offense by “slicing” through the press, Sehome coach AJ LaBree said in a phone interview.
The Mariners’ press prowess showed in the statline, as they had only five turnovers to Blaine’s 21. Elijah Andrushenko and Langston Engle led the Sehome defense in the front of the press and showed amazing energy, LaBree noted.
“From the opening tip and to the end we pressed fullcourt or 3/4 court,” LaBree said. “We tried to force action, make them run and make decisions with the ball. Then we did a good job anticipating where the ball would go, and the reverse on offense, did a good job taking care of the ball.”
Carson Knutzen led the Borderites (4-11, 3-5) with 12 points, and Shaq Woods and Jalen Kortlever each had 11. LaBree complemented Knutzen’s “uncanny knack for making mid-range shots.”
Sehome will look to continue its winning ways in a 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, game at home against Squalicum. Blaine has a chance to get a win at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at home against Port Townsend.
