Trojans earn first NWC win behind Martin’s 29

Alex Martin scored a season-high 29 points and nine rebounds, and Meridian’s boys’ basketball team rolled to a 51-38 win over Burlington-Edison on Friday, Jan. 23, at Burlington-Edison in a Northwest Conference game.

Nick Rautenberg added five points and a team-high five assists for the Trojans (9-8, 1-7 NWC) in their first conference win of the season.

The game was close at 32-27 going into the fourth quarter, but Meridian pulled away thanks to one of Martin’s 3-pointers with about four and a half minutes left, Meridian coach Shane Stacy said.

“I thought we did a good job executing,” Stacy added in a phone interview. “We were 12 of 15 from free throw in the fourth and there were two lane violations. I think most important was defense. (Burlington-Edison’s Blake) Rawlins averages probably 18 points per game and we held him to 0-for-15 shooting.”

Trey Lopez led the Tigers (2-13, 1-6) with 13 points.

Meridian plays again at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, at Nooksack Valley.
