Big second half keys Borderites win over Mariners

The Blaine girls’ basketball team rode a strong second half to earn a 52-41 Northwest Conference win over Sehome on Friday, Jan. 23, at Sehome High School.

The Borderites (6-9, 6-2 NWC) were led by Mandy Hayes, who had 21 points and helped her team turn up the aggressiveness in the second half.

“Our kids came out and executed great in the first half,” Sehome coach Kim Kirk said in a phone interview. “Early on we did well on Hayes and (Taylor) V’Dovec, but we lost sight of Hayes in the second half and gave her too many chances at the free-throw line. ... We got good looks, but we went a little dry in the third.”

Maddy Bryan led the Mariners (4-11, 1-6) with 16 points and helped hold V’Dovec to a single-digit scoring total.

Sehome takes on city rival Squalicum at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, at Squalicum. Blaine hits the road for a game beginning at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, at Ferndale.
