Balanced Pioneers sink Tigers

Nooksack Valley’s girls’ basketball team took care of the ball and held off Burlington-Edison in a 51-37 Northwest Conference win Wednesday, Jan. 21, at Burlington-Edison.

Mariah Perry led the Pioneers (10-4, 3-3 NWC) with 13 points and four assists, and tied with Arlissa Oettel, Brianna Turner, Katrina Gimmaka and Lacey Johnson for the team lead in rebounding.

“The kids played great tonight, I’m really proud of them,” Nooksack Valley coach Shane Stacy said in a phone interview. “Coming into Burlington and getting a win here is not easy to do. I think our help-side defense was good tonight. They put a lot of pressure on the ball and we took care of it tonight. They want to turn turnovers into easy layups and we didn’t give them any easy layups.”

Payton Linville added 11 points and Gimmaka had 12 for Nooksack Valley. Edie Breckenridge led the Tigers (11-3, 4-2) with seven points.

Nooksack Valley plays next at 6:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, at Mount Baker.
