Pioneers come up just short in loss to Tigers

Despite a steal in the final seconds and a 20-point second quarter, the Nooksack Valley boys’ basketball team came up just short in a 49-47 Northwest Conference loss to Burlington-Edison on Wednesday, Jan. 21, at Nooksack Valley.

Burlington-Edison (2-12, 1-5 NWC) inbounded the ball with 3.9 seconds left and the Pioneers managed to get a steal, but turned the ball back over before they could get off a shot to end the game.

Jeremy Toner led the Pioneers (1-13, 0-6 NWC) with 18 points, four rebounds, a steal and an assist. He also shot 9 of 12 from the field and was helpful in the 20-point second quarter.

“We started going inside and they had to play with a sense of urgency,” Nooksack Valley coach Chris Scrimsher said in a phone interview. “We made good decisions and shared the ball, and we also had really diversified scoring, which was great. We got outrebounded by three, and when its this close, those possessions are important.”

Nooksack Valley takes on Mount Baker at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, at home.
