Blackhawks come up just short

Treena Humphreys scored 25 points but Lummi’s girls’ basketball team came up just short against Grace Academy in a 49-48 loss on Tuesday, Jan. 20, at home.

The Blackhawks scored to pull within one point with 20 seconds left after trailing by seven in the first half. They grabbed a rebound and turned up the court to go for a winning basket but gave away an easy turnover and had to try to get the ball back without fouling, Lummi coach Albert Toby said.

Lummi had 18 fouls in the game, but Grace Academy shot just 12 of 21 from the charity stripe.

“We thought we handled the press really well this time,” Toby said in a phone interview. “Last time it tore us up. We were prepared for the full- and half-court press. The girls were pretty stoked with the way we countered the press tonight.”

Halle Sturgeon added eight points and Janyha Ell scored six.

Lummi has the rest of the week off before taking on Orcas Christian at 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 26, at Orcas Christian in the first of five games in consecutive days.
