Lions’ defense shuts down Mountaineers

Lynden’s girls’ basketball team held Mount Baker’s Emily Brandland and Emily Yost to just 20 points combined in a 51-35 Northwest Conference win on Tuesday, Jan. 20, at Lynden.

Elisa Kooiman led the Lions (10-4, 6-0 NWC) with 21 points. Brandland’s 13 led the Moutaineers (8-6, 2-4).

“We had an emphasis, as a team, on playing good man-to-man defense,” Lynden coach Rob Adams said in a phone interview. “Mount Baker only had 28 with about two minutes to go. We had a goal of holding them under 30, and they just got over that late in the fourth.”

Jasmyne Neria and Mandy Warner were standouts for Lynden, with 14 points combined. Their attack of the Baker zone defense was key, and Neria helped hold Yost to a low point total, Adams said.

Lynden takes on Lynden Christian at 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, at home. Mount Baker hosts Nooksack Valley at 6:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, at home.
