Big third boosts Borderites

Blaine’s girls’ basketball team used a 22-5 third quarter to open up a big lead and take a 66-39 Northwest Conference win over Bellingham on Tuesday, Jan. 20, at Bellingham High School.

“Blaine did a really nice job of getting out in the passing lanes and it frustrated the rhythm of our offense,” Bellingham coach Ed Wissing said in a phone interview. “We did a pretty good job attacking the basket and getting to the free throw line.”

Bellingham (3-11, 0-6 NWC) shot 15 of 26 on free throws, scoring nearly half of its points from the line. Joelle Zamora led the Red Raiders with 17 points and Wissing complemented her consistency.

Blaine (5-9, 5-2) was led by Kiana Gray’s 15 points, 13 of which came in the second half. Mandy Hayes added 11 and Taylor V’Dovec had 10.

Bellingham plays next at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, at Ferndale. Blaine takes on Sehome at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, at Sehome.
