Lions overcome Golden Eagles’ quick start

Lynden’s boys’ basketball team used 16 points and eight rebounds from Sterling Somers to top Northwest Conference rival Ferndale 63-50 in a nonleague game on Saturday, Jan. 17, at Lynden High School.

Somers’ points and rebounds were game-highs. Ferndale’s Malik Ivory shared game-high honors in points with 16. John Weg added 13 points and six rebounds and Austin Honeycutt had 11 points.

“Ferndale shot the ball really well early. They were up 18-13 at the end of the first quarter,” Lynden coach Brian Roper said in a phone interview. “We stayed the course, and I thought defensively in the second and third we clamped down really well. Our third-quarter, offensive rebounding by multiple guys turned the game. They gave us some second chance shots and got to the foul line.”

Honeycutt, the Golden Eagles’ leading scorer for the season, was held below his season average of 21.4 points per game (through Jan. 15). His play still impressed Roper.

“He hit some 3s early, but he’s a good player,” Roper said. “He’s crafty and can shoot it. He’s a guy who can get 30 on any given night.”

Lynden also had 14 points from Scooter Hastings, but the sophomore duo of Andrew Kivlighn (8 points) and Davis Bode (3) also stood out to the Lions’ coach.

“Kivlighn and Bode are starting to play more like seasoned veterans,” Roper added. “Kivlighn is giving us good point guard play with six assists and one turnover. Those are winning numbers.”

Lynden will look for another win at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, at Mount Baker in an NWC match-up. Ferndale plays again at 7:15 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, in a nonleague game at Oak Harbor.
