Squalicum pulls away from Nooksack Valley for league win

The Nooksack Valley boys’ basketball team hung with Squalicum for a half, but third-quarter pressure defense helped the Storm build a large lead and pull away from the Pioneers for a 67-60 Northwest Conference win Friday, Jan. 16, in Everson.

Squalicum led 31-25 at the break, but Nooksack Valley coach Chris Scrimsher said in a two-minute span the Storm’s lead was pushed from six to 16.

“It was pretty much a close game into the third quarter, and then they applied full-court pressure on us,” Scrimsher said in a phone interview. “And really that was a big part of the game, and they outrebounded us by eight.”

The Pioneers got 25 points from Connor Beard, who Scrimsher said played terrific, especially since he was nursing a sprained ankle.

Squalicum’s Damek Mitchell scored a team-high 15 points to go with seven rebounds and four assists, Josiah Westbrook contributed 13 points and Noah Westerhoff chipped in 12.

The Storm (9-4, 4-1 NWC) host Meridian next at 7:15 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, while Nooksack Valley (1-12, 0-5 NWC) hosts Burlington-Edison next at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21.
