Turnovers doom Borderites

Despite shooting 35 free throws and holding a 38-27 rebounding advantage, Blaine’s boys’ basketball team suffered a 69-49 loss to Anacortes on Friday, Jan. 16, in a Northwest Conference game in Anacortes.

The Borderites (3-10, 2-4 NWC) were led by Kier Munzanreder and Carson Knutzen, who had 10 points each. Ty Johnson led the Seahawks (12-2, 6-0) with 20 points.

Committing 19 turnovers was what did in the Borderites, coach Shaun Pile said.

“It was a close game throughout. We handled the pressure, got to the foul line and were 15 of 17 from there in the first half,” Pile said in a phone interview. “But 19 turnovers, and once Munzanreder fouled out, that changed the game. We just lost our composure in the fourth quarter. Kier did a great job handling the full-court pressure, and once he fouled out we couldn’t handle that. That was when the turnovers started.”

Blaine is in action again at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, at home against Bellingham.
