Meridian pulls away in fourth quarter of 54-47 win

Meridian’s girls’ basketball team pulled away in the fourth quarter of its 54-47 victory against Squalicum on Tuesday, Jan. 13, at Meridian High Schools.

The Trojans’ Ryley Zapien led the game with 20 points and seven assists, Ellesse FitzGerald added nine points. The Storms’ Sarah Hulbert finished with 17 points.

“It was kind of a wild crazy game, both teams played hard,” Meridian coach Mark Gilmore said in a phone interview. “We finally executed in the fourth quarter and got easy baskets. Zapien played a really good game for us,” Gilmore said.

Meridian will play Lynden Christian next at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 15, on the road. Squalicum plays Nooksack Valley next at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 15, at home.
