Blackhawks earn second win

Lummi’s girls’ basketball team rode Treena Humphrey’s 29 points to a 53-43 win over Highland Christian on Tuesday, Jan. 13, at Lummi in a Northwest 1B League game.

“Treena played under control the whole night,” Lummi coach Albert Toby said in a phone interview. “She played with lots of confidence tonight. This is my first season, so I don’t know if it’s a career high for her, but I heard one of the girls say that’s the most they’ve had in a long time.”

Janyha Ell and Halle Surgeon each added eight points, Sarah Burke scored six and Jayda Phair had two for the Blackhawks (2-7, 2-5 NWL).

“It’s felt good to see our girls improve every game, you can see their confidence come in as the season progresses,” Toby said. “Halle Sturgeon and Sarah Burke really controlled the boards tonight. Usually on defense (the opponents) are hitting second and third shots, but tonight they got one shot each time and Halle and Sarah maintained the boards tonight.”

Highland Christian only had five players and two of them fouled out in the final 1 minute, 30 seconds of the game.

Lummi plays next at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, at Lopez.
