Squalicum trio leads Storm over Bellingham

Squalicum’s girls’ basketball team had three players score in double digits in a 52-36 win over Bellingham on Friday, Jan. 9, at Bellingham High School in a Northwest Conference game.

The Storm (6-6, 1-3 NWC) were led by Sydney Arndorfer’s 12 points, while Sarah Hulbert and Chalae Wolters each added 10 points. Hulbert also had a game-high 10 rebounds.

“Our game plan was to hold Wolters, and she got in a bit of foul trouble early, but Arndorfer and Hulbert did a great job of knocking down their shots and sustaining the run against us,” Bellingham coach Ed Wissing said in a phone interview. “We had some runs, we just couldn’t get the lid off and we didn’t do well enough from the foul line.”

Bellingham (3-8, 0-3) shot 12 of 28 from the charity stripe. The Red Raiders were led by Joelle Zamora’s 12 points. Susie Bennett added a team-high six rebounds.

“Zamora had to work hard for all her buckets,” Wissing added. “Bennett played great defense. She only played 11 minutes on the court and was our rebounding leader, so that tells you what kind of effort she brought.”

The Red Raiders look to bounce back at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, at Anacortes. Squalicum plays next at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, at Meridian.
