Defense rules in Trojans’ win over Sehome

Meridian’s girls’ basketball team was able to hold off Sehome in a defensive battle, 52-48 in a Northwest Conference game on Wednesday, Jan. 7, at Meridian.

The Trojans were led in scoring by Kyrin Baklund’s 10 points. Sydney Swanson added nine points and six rebounds and Ellesse FitzGerald had eight points and six rebounds. Ryley Zapien also scored nine points before fouling out for Meridian.

“It was full-court both ways, man-to-man, a real scrappy game,” Meridian coach Mark Gilmore said in a phone interview. “If defense wins games, that’s the one. We covered up so many mistakes and played good defense. Sehome didn’t shoot well from the foul line, which was lucky for us since we put them there 29 times.”

Devin Grahn led the Mariners with 15 points and Maddy Bryan added 11 more. Madison Ulrich also had nine points. The two teams combined for 45 turnovers.

Meridian takes on Lynden at 6:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, at home. Sehome is in action at 6:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, at Lynden Christian.
