High School Basketball

All four Lynden schools ranked in top 10

Three weeks have past since the last version of the Associated Press Washington State Prep Basketball Polls were released, and much has transpired on the court since. But that doesn’t mean a lot of movement when the new polls were released Wednesday, Jan. 7.

With the pedigree of basketball played in Lynden, it’s little surprise the Lynden and Lynden Christian boys’ and girls’ teams were each ranked within the top eight of their respective polls.

The Lynden Christian girls (8-3, 3-0 NWC), broke a two-game losing streak with a win against Sedro-Woolley on Tuesday, Jan. 6, and all three of the Lyncs’ losses have been against top-caliber competition. LC was tied with Cashmere for No. 1 in this week’s poll.

The Lynden boys (6-3, 1-1 NWC), which were ranked No. 2 in this week’s Class 2A poll, also suffered a few losses during the break. The Lions’ most disheartening defeat came in a league contest against Anacortes on Tuesday, Jan. 6. With most voting Tuesday afternoon, votes most likely didn’t take into account Lynden’s loss to the Seahawks.

Lynden Christian’s boys’ team (8-3, 2-1 NWC) maintained its No. 5 ranking in the 1As, and the Lyncs are riding a five-game win streak. The Lynden girls (6-4, 2-0 NWC) dropped one spot to No. 8.

On the boys’ side beyond the Lynden schools, Class 1A Meridian and Class 1B Lummi were ranked. The Trojans (8-4, 0-3 NWC) was ranked No. 8 this week. The Blackhawks (8-0, 5-0 NWL) were ranked No. 4 this week and received two first-place votes after not being ranked in the last edition.

Sehome and Squalicum each received votes, but neither school received enough to crack the top 10.

On the girls’ side Nooksack Valley (8-2, 1-1 NWC) was ranked No. 9. The Pioneers have won four straight since losing to Lynden three weeks ago. Ferndale (9-1, 1-1 NWC) was one vote away in the 3A poll from breaking into the top 10.

Federal Way (Class 4A), Rainier Beach (3A), Clarkston (2A), Zillah (1A), Morton-White Pass (2B) and Neah Bay (1B) earned top rankings in the boys’ poll, and Gonzaga Prep (4A), Lynwood (3A), Mark Morris (2A), Toutle Lake (2B) and Colton (1B) were top ranked in the girls’ poll.
