Borderites top Baker with big second half

Blaine’s boys’ basketball team got 21 points from Kier Munzanreder and had a big second half en route to a 58-53 win over Mount Baker on Tuesday, Jan. 6, at Mount Baker in a Northwest Conference game.

“It was back and forth all game, luckily the third was big for us,” Blaine coach Shaun Pile said in a phone interview. “We were able to create offense off of defense and steals. Baker did a good job of scrapping, and luckily we hit enough free throws to close it out.”

Ben Hodgin was a key factor in the Borderites’ second-half comeback. He scored nine of his 12 points in the third quarter. Blaine (3-7, 2-1 NWC) trailed 25-23 at the half, but outscored Mount Baker (4-8, 0-3 NWC) 35-28 in the second.

The Mountaineers were led by Colton Ranson and TJ Bass, who each had 13 points. Grant Balvanz added 10 for Baker.

Blaine takes on Sedro-Woolley at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, at home. Mount Baker plays Ferndale at 7:15 p.m. Monday, Jan. 12, at home.
