Baker outworked in second half of loss

Mount Baker’s boys’ basketball team cruised out to a 28-19 halftime lead but that would be the end of the Mountaineers’ success, as they fell to Sultan 61-55 on Friday, Jan. 2, at Mount Baker High School.

“Basically the second half we didn’t defend very well,” Baker coach Rob Gray said in a phone interview. “Sultan came out and shot the ball really well in the third quarter. ... They played a little harder than we did in the second half.”

Sultan went 9 for 9 from the free-throw line and hit three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.

“We just have to become a little more mature,” Gray said. “Every possession is important. We need to have guys willing to dive on loose balls and go get rebounds.”

Grant Balvanz was one of the players that impressed coach Gray, as Balvanz scored 11 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter and added five assists on the night. Timothy Soares had 13 points and 10 rebounds and TJ Bass had 12 points.

The Mountaineers get back to action on Tuesday, Jan. 6, against Blaine in Deming.
