Baker’s balanced attack leads to win

Four players scored in double digits to help Mount Baker’s girls’ basketball team earn a 57-48 win over Bellevue Christian on Tuesday, Dec. 30, at Lynden Christian for the Cloud 9 Christmas Classic.

The Yost sisters, Emily and McKenzie, had a combined 29 points and Emily had 18 rebounds. Kylee Engholm and Emily Brandland each added 11 points for the Mountaineers.

“I think yesterday we felt was a disappointment as far as our performance, so we made a decision that we were going to play defense the way we want to play defense and that sparked us,” Mount Baker coach Brenda Ellis said in a phone interview. “We were more intense. We had a really good first half with 30 points.

“I think it was good yesterday for Cascade Christian to limit Emily (Yost) because that forced the other girls to look at being offensive-minded, and we haven’t had to do that much, but today Kylee had 11, McKenzie had 14 and Emily Brandland had some really nice passes, which was huge. Both Emily’s did a really good job being unselfish. Early on this season they’ve been taking the majority of the shots, and today they shared the ball better because of yesterday.”

Brandland also had four assists.

Baker takes on Blaine at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, at Blaine in Northwest Conference play.
