Mount Baker’s have big third quarter in 79-63 victory over Granite Falls

Mount Baker’s boys’ basketball team used a strong third quarter to cruise to a 79-63 victory over Granite Falls on Monday, Dec. 29, in the Blaine Holiday Classic at Blaine High School.

The Mountaineers’ Timothy Soares led the game with 31 points and 20 rebounds, both career highs. Granite Falls’ Steven Hyvari finished with 22 points.

“We stopped penetration on defense and got hands in shooters faces,” Mount Baker coach Rob Gray said in a phone interview. “We played better defense in the second half and competed real hard.”

Mount Baker held Granite Falls to 23 points in the second half after giving up 21 in the second quarter alone.

The Mountaineers will play Blaine/Lord Tweedsmuir next at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 30, in the Blaine Holiday Classic championship game at Blaine.
