Shorthanded Red Raiders hold on for win

Kyle Hofstetter scored 14 points and dished out eight assists to lead Bellingham’s boys’ basketball team to a 59-51 win over Lake Stevens on Monday, Dec. 29, at Mountlake Terrace High School at the Mountlake Terrace Boys Holiday Tournament.

Hofstetter led a Red Raiders squad that was without regular contributors Logan Schilder, Kalien Hayes and Eric Thompson.

“Hofstetter was great for us. He calmed us down and that allowed us to run our stuff,” Bellingham coach Brad McKay said in a phone interview. “(Jakob) Chamberlin, (Austin) Shenton and (Nathan) Pearsall were big on the front lines.”

Shenton had 14 points and six rebounds, tied for the team lead in boards with Kieran Lewis, who also had 16 points.

“I think our team defense set the tone early in the first,” McKay said. “We were able to jump on them early on and hold on at the end. We did a good job containing their guys. Even though (Lake Stevens’ Jacob) Eason had 16 points, but he never got going.”

Bellingham led 31-20 at the end of the first half.

The Red Raiders play again at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at Mountlake Terrace for the Mountlake Terrace Boys Holiday Tournament against an opponent to be determined.
