Meridian notches easy win in home tournament

Meridian’s girls’ basketball team cruised to a 65-26 win over Granite Falls on Friday, Dec. 26, at the Meridian Holiday Tournament at Meridian High School.

The Trojans’ full-court, man-to-man defense held the Tigers to just 10 points in the first half.

“It was pretty lopsided,” Meridian coach Mark Gilmore said in a phone interview. “Even with the holiday break, everybody came out with great energy. We played real well, created a lot of opportunities for ourselves. In the second half it was a little harder with slowing things down.”

Kyrin Baklund led the Trojans with 15 points, Ellese FitzGerald added 12 and Ryley Zapien had 10 points and seven assists.

“Ryley played a great game again. She sees the girls well and had seven assists and five steals,” Gilmore said. “Sydney Swanson got back to work. She was getting after rebounds.”

Swanson finished with four points and a team-high nine rebounds. Meridian created 26 Granite Falls turnovers.

Meridian takes on Sultan in the championship game of the Meridian Holiday Tournament at 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, at home.
