Mitchell leads Storm to big win over Blaine

Damek Mitchell scored a game-high 24 points and had a team-high five assists to lead Squalicum’s boys’ basketball team to a 66-44 win over Blaine on Monday, Dec. 22, at Squalicum.

The Storm also benefited from winning the turnover battle 14-7 and having just 12 fouls to the Borderites 23. The two teams combined for just 12 points in the first quarter.

“Baskets were hard to come by initially,” Squalicum coach Dave Dickson said in a phone interview. “We started picking it up in the second quarter, when Mitchell had 11 of his 24 and kind of sparked us, got us going. The guys shared the ball and played good team defense. Mitchell was also 14 of 16 on free throws.”

Dickson also highlighted Darious Powell, who had 10 points, for bringing energy off the bench, and Chris Paz’s defense. Paz also had nine points.

Kier Munzanreder led the Borderites with 14 points, and Shaq Woods added 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Squalicum takes on Prairie at 9 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 26, at the Yakima SunDome and Blaine will play Nathan Hale next at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 23, on the road.
