Pioneers’ steps up defense in 67-33 victory against Overlake

Nooksack Valley’s girls’ basketball team outrebounded Overlake by 19 in its 67-33 victory Saturday, Dec. 20, at Overlake High School.

The Pioneers’ Nikki VanderHeiden led the game with 13 points and Emelia Gimmaka added 10.

“In the first half we didn’t play defense like we are capable of, we challenged ourselves to play better on defense in the second half,” Nooksack Valley coach Shane Wichers said in a phone interview.

Nooksack Valley’s defense stepped up in the second half, allowing only 12 points.

The Pioneers’ take on Port Townsend at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 26, at a tournament.
