Rebounding boosts Lions over 1A No. 1 King’s

Lynden’s boys’ basketball team, ranked No. 2 in Class 2A, held off Class 1A No. 1-ranked King’s for a 52-47 win on Saturday, Dec. 20, at King’s High School in Shoreline.

Jonathan Whetnall led the Lions with 20 points and a team-high four assists. Sterling Somers pitched in 12 points and 10 rebounds, including eight offensive rebounds.

Lynden winning the rebounding battle 40-15, including 21 offensive rebounds, was key to the victory.

“King’s runs a trapping style of defense, which can leave the backside open,” Lynden coach Brian Roper said in a phone interview. “Our guys were relentless on the glass. On a night where there wasn’t much rhythm to our game, we were able to scrap and claw for some putbacks.”

Lynden takes on Anacortes in nonconference action at 7:15 p.m Monday, Dec. 22, at home.
