Anacortes steals a 71-62 win in Ferndale

Ferndale’s boys’ basketball team came up short against Anacortes in a 71-62 defeat Friday, Dec. 19, at Ferndale High School.

The Golden Eagles’ Austin Honeycutt scored 26 points and John Weg had 16.

“We had our effort there. We just didn’t play very smart,” Ferndale coach Monte Walton said in a phone interview.

Ferndale’s defense didn’t allow any 3-pointers from the Seahawks in the entire game. But the Golden Eagles were out-rebounded by 10 in what seemed to be the difference in the game.

“Our defense needed to step up, it’s not at the point we want it to be,” Walton said. “(Anacortes) got to the basket way too many times in the fourth quarter.”

Weg was a player on offense Walton said stood out and Sky Freeman off the bench played good defensively throughout the game.

Ferndale takes on Marysville-Getchell next at 7:15 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, at home.
