Meridian tops Anacortes at the buzzer

Meridian’s girls’ basketball team came away with a victory against Anacortes 45-44 in a game that came down to the final seconds Tuesday, Dec. 16, at Meridian High School.

The Trojans’ Ryley Zapien led the team with 19 points and Kyrin Baklund added seven.

“We were down by one with 4.7 seconds left. Zapien took the ball to the hole, got fouled and made both free throws,” Meridian coach Mark Gilmore said in a phone interview. “Then we were able to get a hand on Anacortes’ last-second shot.”

Bryn Magnusson finished the game with seven rebounds. Gilmore said she did a great job on the boards and defending inside.

Meridian takes on Bellingham at 7:15 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 19, at home.
