Trojans can’t recover from tough start in boys’ basketball

A rough first quarter by the Meridian boys’ basketball team led the way to a 71-44 loss Tuesday, Dec. 16, at Anacortes in boys’ basketball action.

Anacortes stormed out to a 25-7 first-quarter lead and the Trojans couldn’t make up ground.

“First quarter, (Anacortes) came out firing, ready to play,” Meridian coach Shane Stacy said in a phone interview. “When you get into a 25-7 hole, that’s a tough one to climb out of.”

Alex Martin had 15 points and 10 rebounds for Meridian, Daniel Young added nine points and three assists and Meridian suffered its first loss of the season.

Ty Johnson led Anacortes with 19 points.

Stacy said he has a reason to value these games against bigger schools.

“They exploit your weaknesses,” Stacy said. “... You get better and better when you face these teams. That will only help us when we play other 1A teams.”

Meridian (6-1, 0-1 NWC) has a 7:15 p.m. game at Bellingham on Thursday, Dec. 18.
