PREP BOYS’ BASKETBALL PREVIEW: Squalicum Storm

Coach: Dave Dickson

Last year: Finished sixth in the Northwest Conference with a 7-5 record. ... Did not qualify for postseason and finished 11-9 overall.

Players to watch: Damek Mitchell (so., G); Harper Moore (sr., P); Josiah Westbrook (jr., G); Chris Paz (sr., P)

Outlook: The Storm may be young, but Dickson said his group has a lot of upside. There could be an some early struggles, but the Storm’s young talent could pay dividends later in the year and surely in the future. “We have a steep learning curve, and we’re hoping to get better,” Dickson said in a phone interview. “We certainly have some talented guys, and we’re just trying to fit the pieces together to maximize our success.” Some of those talents include Mitchell, who averaged 11.2 points per game last winter, Westbrook (21.8), who put together a strong year at Blaine last season, Moore (1.3) and Chris Paz. The four, together with the rest of the team, will have to make up for the graduation of Blake Youtsey, who averaged 17.9 points per game, and a large group of other talented graduates. “I think we are quick on the perimeter, defensively as well as offensively,” Dickson said. “I think it makes us a tough matchup. I think the guys are coming together as a unit, and I like the heart of the guys.”
