High School Basketball

Coach: Jerome Toby

Last year: Went 8-3 during the Northwest 1B League schedule. ... Ended season after going 2-2 in the Class 1A Tri-District Tournament and finished 19-7 overall.

Players to watch: Dino Williams (sr., G); Kavarez Lane (jr., G); Trazil Lane (so., F); Austin Brockie (sr., G)

Outlook: For Lummi to have the success it desires, Toby made it clear the Blackhawks need to play better defense. “We want to increase our ball pressure and team defense,” Toby said in a phone interview. “We have to be a better defensive team and play with intensity for 32 minutes. We’ve emphasized that early on in the season.” The Blackhawks bring back some key players, but Lummi will have to make up for the loss of Logan Toby, who’s been the team’s primary ball handler each of the past three seasons. Back though are both Trazil (14.4 points per game) and Kaverez Lane (10.6), who led Lummi in scoring last year. Also returning is Brockie (10.0), who Toby said is a strong wing player. Williams (5.6) is slated to take over point guard duties, and Toby is confident in his ability to run the offense. Lummi has seven returners from last year, and Toby said that experience will help early in the year while the team makes up for time missed with the elongated football season. Expect Willie Jones and Devin Cooper to also carve out key roles.
