Nooksack Valley girls play strong defense in win over Meridian

The Nooksack Valley girls’ basketball team played what coach Shane Wichers billed as its best defensive game of the season and captured a 48-37 non-conference win over Meridian on Friday, Dec. 12, at Nooksack Valley High School.

The Pioneers held the Trojans to single digits each of the first three quarters before giving up 18 in the fourth.

Mariah Perry led Nooksack Valley with a game-high 16 points and seven assists, while Brianna Turner hauled in 13 rebounds to go with her two points. Nooksack Valley also outrebounded Meridian 36-15.

“We did a great job of making it real difficult for Meridian to get easy shots,” Wichers said in a phone interview. “I was really happy with the defensive effort.”

Meridian (4-0) travels to play La Conner next at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13.
