Coach: Monte Walton
Last year: Finished tied for eighth in the Northwest Conference with a 5-7 record. ... Ended season after going 1-2 in the 3A District Tournament and finished 9-14 overall.
Players to watch: Austin Honeycutt (jr., W/P); Brady Shearer (sr., W); Dante Kelly (sr., W); John Weg (jr., P); Malik Ivory (sr., G)
Outlook: Not only does Ferndale return four of its starters from last year’s squad, the Golden Eagles are extremely unselfish and know how to share the basketball, Walton said. “Their mindset is so unselfish,” said Walton of Honeycutt, Shearer, Kelly and Weg in a phone interview. “They’ve come out and played with intensity from day one, and they are excited about playing as a team.” Honeycutt (16.7 points per game) was the team’s leading scorer a season ago, and Shearer (12.4) complemented him well in the backcourt. Kelly (5.3) is a talented and experienced wing, and Weg (8.9), at 6-foot-7, gives the Golden Eagles a strong inside presence. Point guard Ivory (4.9) is expected to round out Ferndale’s starting lineup. Walton said the Golden Eagles inside-outside game will be key with teams keying on Honeycutt and Weg, and on defense Walton placed an emphasis on limiting teams to one shot per possession. Sophomore guard Sky Freeman, senior wing Garett Holmes and sophomore post Carson Genger are expected to give quality minutes off the bench.
