Ryley Zapien scored a team-high 22 points to lead Meridian’s girls’ basketball team to a 43-35 win over Vashon Island on Thursday, Dec. 11, at Vashon Island.
Zapien also led the Trojans with five assists. Sydney Swanson added two points and 10 rebounds.
“(Zapien) is a floor leader,” Meridian coach Mark Gilmore said in a phone interview. “Even though she’s a sophomore, she’s a leader on the floor. She was aggressive getting to the rim and sees people that are open. We didn’t shoot very well, but they played through it. The other team kept coming at us, and we didn’t keep them off the boards late in the game. But we battled and kept our energy up even with a lot of turnovers we were able to hold on.”
Meridian had 17 turnovers, but forced 26 from Vashon Island to overcome the miscues.
