Early foul trouble dooms Trojans in loss to Tigers

Meridian’s girls’ basketball team got in some early foul trouble and fell 64-47 to Burlington-Edison on Tuesday, Dec. 9, at Burlington-Edison.

The Trojans were led by Ryley Zapien and Janessa Murphy, who had 10 points each.

“I thought Murphy playing against their two big posts played really well,” Meridian coach Mark Gilmore said in a phone interview. “She only came out of the game for one or two minutes. We had three girls on the bench with foul trouble in the first quarter. The refs were consistent throughout the game, though.”

Burlington-Edison plays the same style Meridian hopes it can emulate, and the Tigers’ maturity seemed to be the difference, Gilmore added.

Meridian will play Vashon Island next at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, at Vashon Island.
